Basel stays close to Lugano

FC Basel remain hot on the heels of leaders Lugano. They won 4-1 against Sion in the 20th round of the Super League and continued their impressive home record against the Valais side.
St. Jakob-Park remains an impregnable fortress for Sion. The last victory for the Valais side in Basel dates back to 2015, when they won the Cup final against FCB 3-0. The last away win in the championship at the knee of the Rhine was much longer ago. In 1997, when the league was still called the NLA, Didier Tholot was among the scorers in a 3-1 win for the Valais side.
On Sunday, the 60-year-old Frenchman, who is now in his fourth spell in charge of FC Sion, could dream of a historic victory until the break. Théo Berdayes put the visitors ahead after 20 minutes. However, Dominik Schmid equalized the score just before the break.
Even after Kevin Carlos made it 2:1 for the home team (54'), the visitors were not without their chances. In the end, however, they lacked the cold-bloodedness that the Basel team displayed. Joe Mendes (67') and Philip Otele (76') scored their first goals in FCB kit to make sure that Sion's horror record at St. Jakob-Park remained intact.
Basel remain one point behind Lugano in first place.
