The White House is taking a liking to the idea of naming a new sports stadium in the US capital Washington after President Donald Trump. "That would be a nice name, because it was President Trump who made the reconstruction of the new stadium possible," spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told The Hill and the sports channel ESPN. A high-ranking White House official was also quoted by ESPN as saying: "This is what the president wants. And it's probably going to happen."

ESPN had previously reported, citing people familiar with the situation, that Trump was pushing for a corresponding appointment.

Costs are around 3.2 billion euros

The new stadium will primarily serve as the home of the Washington Commanders football team. It is planned with around 65,000 seats and is to be built on the eastern outskirts of the city on the site of the dilapidated RFK Stadium. The costs are estimated at around 3.7 billion US dollars (3.2 billion euros). As part of the project, a comprehensive redesign of the district is also planned - with stores, apartments and green spaces.

The current stadium on the Anacostia River, around three kilometers from the Capitol, can no longer be used. The Commanders have not played there since 1996, but in the neighboring state of Maryland. On Sunday, Trump will watch the team's home game against the Detroit Lions there, according to the White House.

Trump's other demands

Trump had previously also called for the Washington Commanders to revert to their former name of "Redskins". Civil rights groups and representatives of indigenous communities criticized this as racist and derogatory.

The team dropped the name in 2020 and has been known as the Commanders since 2022. Trump is also calling for a return to the old name for the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, formerly known as the Cleveland Indians.
