The Board of Trustees had confirmed the unanimous proposal of the search committee to elect Szymczyk, as the SAM announced on Monday. He will take up the post in 2026. Born in Poland in 1970, he studied art history in Warsaw and completed his curatorial training at the De Appel exhibition center in Amsterdam.
"After more than 25 years as a curator for exhibitions in the field of contemporary art, I am really looking forward to contributing my knowledge and experience in a new environment," Scymczyk is quoted as saying in the press release.
For him, the new position marks a return to Basel: from 2002 to 2014, he managed the Kunsthalle, where he was responsible for over 80 exhibitions. In 2013, he was appointed Artistic Director of Documenta 14, which he organized simultaneously in Athens and Kassel in 2017.
