The famous Amsterdam Hilton Hotel is closing for an extended period for extensive renovation. It was the scene of one of the most bizarre peace demonstrations in history. The legendary "bed-in" by Beatle John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono took place here in 1969.

The renovation and extension work is expected to take a good year. And according to the hotel, fans need not worry. The John and Yoko suite will remain. The suite where the bed-in took place has become a place of pilgrimage for fans of John Lennon over the past 56 years.
Reporter on the edge of the bed
The newlyweds arrived in Amsterdam from Paris in a cream-colored Rolls-Royce on March 24, 1969 and went to bed. The Beatles star and the Japanese concept artist stayed in Suite 902 of the then relatively new hotel for seven days. And they invited the world's press.
The bed-in was intended as a demonstration against the Vietnam War. "We're staying in bed for peace," said Lennon from the wide double bed. They had stuck posters on the window: "Hair Peace" and "Bed Peace". "We bring the message of love and peace," Lennon told reporters.
Every day, dozens of journalists from all over the world sat on the edge of the famous couple's bed. Fans also came, wanting autographs or bringing gifts. Lennon himself later set a musical monument to this demo with the "Ballad of John and Yoko".
