Presenter Thomas Gottschalk has been awarded the Austrian TV prize Diamant-Romy. He received the award in Kitzbühel in recognition of his TV achievements.

When he received the golden figure wearing a diamond-studded belt, the 75-year-old said: "He's got shingles, shingles". A Romy awarded to him earlier had melted in a fire at his home in Malibu, California. Should such a catastrophe occur again, Gottschalk said he hoped that this time at least the diamonds would remain.

Gottschalk announced last week that he would be retiring from the TV business on December 6 with what will probably be his last Saturday evening show on RTL. The Romy is an Austrian TV and film award presented by the daily newspaper "Kurier". It is awarded in numerous categories by public voting.

The evening's winners also included Caroline Peters (Best Actress Film) and Anke Engelke as well as Veronica Ferres (Most Popular Actress TV/Streaming). For the first time in the history of the award, Engelke and Ferres each had the same number of audience votes. Ferres praised the Austrians' interest in culture. "I love Austria", in the Alpine republic every cab driver knows what has been filmed, she said in her acceptance speech.
