In its fourth edition, Basel Social Club has been playing in three former baroque private bank villas in the heart of Basel's city center since Sunday. Around 500 works by famous and emerging artists are on display in over 100 rooms.

It is an art cosmos without borders that spreads out in the noble salons, the cozy inner courtyards, the storerooms and staircases. Works by famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Jean Tinguely and Jenny Holzer meet works by up-and-coming newcomers from all over the world.

The rooms are also enlivened by numerous performance interludes: there are various bars, a sauna and even a hairdresser's corner as well as a blood bank run by the Swiss Red Cross Blood Donation Center of Basel.

Basel-based artist and curator Hannah Weinberger said at the opening that the location also determined the content of this edition. Quite a few artists have contributed works that deal with money in the former bank premises. The gambling table set up by the Grand Casino Basel is all about money.

Celebrated art event on the fringes of Art Basel

As an initiative of Basel galleries and artists, the Basel Social Club has blossomed into an internationally acclaimed art event on the fringes of the Art Basel art fair. Galleries from all over the world are now taking part.

It all began in 2022 in an empty villa on Basel's prestigious Bruderholz hill. This was followed by a massively expanded event in the halls of the former mayonnaise and coffee substitute factory Thomi+Franck and an open-air edition on the Bruderholz.

The Basel Social Club on Rittergasse in the immediate vicinity of Basel Minster is open until Saturday from 2 p.m. until midnight. Admission is free.
