"ESC Mania" is the name of a television program in which Swiss music celebrities such as Stephanie Heinzmann and Bastian Baker cover an ESC winning song. In this way, Swiss television SRF is heating up the ESC fever a week before the final (May 17).
Several musicians will perform an ESC winning song from 1956 to the present day, as SRF announced on Wednesday. Oesch's die Dritten, the family band and folk music group from the Bernese Oberland, singers Seven and Bastian Baker, singer Sina, dialect musician Kunz, rapper Gigi and Stefanie Heinzmann will cover the songs. The Saturday evening show, which kicks off the ESC week, will be hosted by Sven Epiney.
The artists' task is to perform the winning songs "in a way that would inspire an 'ESC' audience of millions today", according to the press release. Stefanie Heinzman, for example, will cover the song "Rise like a Phoenix", with which Conchita Wurst won the Song Contest for Austria in 2014.
Luca Hänni and Francine Jordi, two personalities who have already gained experience at the ESC and will bring stories from it, will also be part of the show. In addition, the Fribourg musician Zoë Më will present an acoustic version of this year's Swiss ESC entry "Voyage".
