The actress and Swiss "Tatort" detective Anna Pieri Zuercher has changed sides on the film set: Together with her husband, she has made a short film that was shown at the Solothurn Film Festival and is nominated for the Swiss Film Award.
The black comedy entitled "Cherubs" follows two guardian angels cast out by heaven who are condemned to document every human suicide. A truly "unusual job", as Pieri Zuercher says in a video interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency.
"About eight years ago, my husband Pietro Zuercher and I started thinking about our desire to tell stories ourselves," she says. Her father, who passed away a good ten years ago, probably also played a role, as he passed on his love of black comedies from northern Europe to her.
Possible connection to Wim Wenders
The filmmaker does not deny that the story with the two angels is reminiscent of Wim Wenders' classic film "The Sky Over Berlin" from 1987. "It wasn't my idea to make a connection, but Wim Wenders is one of my favorite directors and I discovered cinema for myself with 'Sky over Berlin'. So maybe something shines through," she says.
For a special appearance in "Cherub", she has called on her "Tatort" investigative colleague Carol Schuler, who sings a song at the end of the film. Pieri Zuercher doesn't want to define this ending precisely. "It's about the beauty of imperfection," she says. Everyone can make their own sense of it.
A feature film in preparation
Her first short film is not to be her last film project. She is once again working on a feature film project with her husband. "Once again, it will be a black comedy, one about death and friendship, so we're staying in that vein," she says with a laugh.
The 47-year-old Anna Pieri Zuercher, daughter of an Italian mother and a Swiss-German father, grew up in Biel before settling down with her husband in Pully, Vaud. The trained actress and pianist works in cinema, television and theater.
"Cherubs" has been nominated for the Swiss Film Award. The award ceremony is scheduled for March 27 at the Kongresshaus Zurich.
