Most of the items come from the singer's recently sold apartment in the city of Atlanta in the US state of Georgia, explained the auction house Christie's on Thursday. Starting February 21, there will be a series of eight sales for the singer's collection.

Several Versace T-shirts, decorative items and a portrait of John by the painter Julian Schnabel will go under the hammer. The collection also includes an ivory and gold-colored jumpsuit from the early 1970s, photographs by star photographer Helmut Newton and works by Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.

John bought his home in Atlanta shortly after his drug withdrawal in 1990, Christie's explained. He had found "comfort and support in the warm community and recovery facilities" there.

"This exceptional collection not only presents a diverse selection of remarkable objects that embody Elton's unique life, work and art, but also offers our clients a glimpse into the profound impact the city of Atlanta had on him," Christie's top manager Tash Perrin said.
