  • Singer Nicole ("Ein bisschen Frieden") is going on tour again after overcoming cancer.
  • In an interview, the 58-year-old talks about how she fought the disease and why she didn't make it public for a long time.
  • "A long, dark valley opened up in front of me. I had to go through it, because only at the end of the valley was the sun waiting for me over the mountain top," says Nicole.

Nicole has had a dark time: at the end of 2020, the singer was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

The 58-year-old had to undergo surgery, followed by a months-long battle against cancer with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The musician also lost her hair in the process.

"A long, dark valley opened up in front of me. I had to get through it, because only at the end of the valley was the sun waiting for me above the mountain peak. I had to reach it despite all the obstacles," Nicole wrote on Instagram in May 2022, when she made her illness public for the first time after the suffering had already been overcome.

Nicole: "The world has come to a standstill for me"

"The world stopped for me. It really hit me, the full program," Nicole says in an interview with the magazine "Bunte " about her time of suffering. "But I've always been a fighter. I didn't cry either."

The singer didn't want pity either. "I didn't want to move anyone to tears either," the singer continued. It was nothing short of a miracle that nothing got out to the public for over a year anyway. "The friends kept quiet, the whole village kept quiet," says the singer.

The past two years have been an incredibly tough ordeal. At some point I just thought: "I don't want to die yet. That made me strong. And the support of my loved ones, especially my husband."

When asked whether she is now completely healthy again, the singer says: "Yes, my doctor says I'm cured." Nicole, whose real name is Nicole Seibert, currently goes for check-ups every three months, and so far everything is fine.

"I'm not an isolated case. Around 57,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Germany alone. That's a whole stadium full. I was one of them."

Nicole: "I treat myself to something good from time to time"

Today, Nicole enjoys her life even more consciously. "I treat myself to something good more often. We also travel more when we can without any obligations," she said, raving about a trip to the Maldives with her husband Winfried, whom she married at 19 - her first great love.

She continued: "Most of the things we like, we like together. We enjoy life, like being with our family, going for walks by the lake, taking pleasure in the little things. We appreciate how well we are doing. We really have been very lucky in life."

Thanks to her early marriage, the singer can now enjoy family life to the full: "I became a mother early and a grandmother early too. The advantage is that I can still really bounce along with the girls on the trampoline in the garden."

Nicole: "People want nothing more than peace"

Singer Nicole came into the limelight 41 years ago. Back then, she won the Eurovision Song Contest in Harrogate, England, with "Ein bisschen Frieden", which was then still called the Grand Prix de Eurovision.

How long does it seem since the singer herself won? "As if it happened yesterday, I can see myself sitting on this stool in my black dress with rhinestones, singing the song that changed my whole world. And I'm having a real sense of déjà vu at the moment. People want nothing more than peace. The song is completely timeless."

The fact that she will be 60 next year doesn't bother Nicole one bit: "When I look in the mirror, I'm happy with myself. Getting older doesn't bother me at all. I'm glad that I've got this old."
