Ina Karr will continue to work in Lucerne until mid-2027, as the Lucerne Theater stated in a press release on Tuesday. This will allow for an orderly succession.
Discussions are currently underway regarding the future management structure. These are intended to ensure that the Lucerne Theatre will "continue to be run to the same high artistic and operational standards and quality" from the 2027/2028 season onwards. According to the press release, the Board of Trustees will provide further information in late summer.
For Ina Karr, the appointment as General Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein is "proof that our artistically innovative, successful work with our ensembles and all trades here in Lucerne is being recognized internationally", as she was quoted in the press release.
The Board of Trustees congratulates her and regrets her departure. This is a challenge for Lucerne's theater "in the current situation with unclear future prospects", as the press release continued.
On February 9, the Lucerne electorate rejected a project loan of 13.8 million Swiss francs for a new building for the Lucerne Theater. The "no" vote amounted to 58 percent. Since then, the future of the theater has been unclear.
Ina Karr had a contract until 2031
Karr, who was born in Stuttgart, has been Artistic Director of Lucerne Theater since the 2021/2022 season. A year ago, she extended her contract until summer 2031. She previously worked at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Oldenburg State Theater and the opera at the Mainz State Theater.
The Deutsche Oper am Rhein has two main stages, one in Düsseldorf and one in Duisburg. It is currently managed by Marwin Wendt on an interim basis.
