After "decades of dismantling music", British music education must be brought back up to scratch with immediate and long-term funding, the 34-year-old demanded in a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and several ministers. To achieve this, he said, an investment package of 250 million pounds (around 285 million Swiss francs) was needed this spring.
"Learning an instrument and performing on stage - whether at school or in a community club - is now a luxury that not every child can afford," Sheeran wrote. "Music in and out of school should be for everyone, not just a select few." Among other things, music should be promoted in schools in the same way as sport, and more music teachers should be trained.
Sheeran is not alone in his demands: the letter received support from a whole host of British music greats, including Coldplay, Eric Clapton, Harry Styles, Elton John and Stormzy.
