The ceremony took place in a small Orthodox church beneath the Acropolis, the symbol of Athens. The ceremony was attended by some members of the royal families of Spain and Denmark, as reported by Greek broadcaster ERTnews. Among the guests was the former Queen of Spain, Sofia. She is the groom's aunt.
The monarchy in Greece was abolished by referendum in 1974. At the time, members of the former royal family had lost their Greek citizenship because they refused to take on a surname. Aristocratic titles have not been recognized in the Greek constitution since the abolition of the monarchy.
The former nobles from the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg relented in December last year and adopted the surname "de Grèce". This fulfilled the most important requirement for their naturalization: the acquisition of a Greek surname. Since then, Nikolaos and some of his family members have been living in Greece again.
