On a stage decorated in the style of a crime film, presenter Julia Roos introduced the "investigation picture" for this year's edition in the style of a detective.
The decor contrasted with the cheerful and friendly atmosphere at the opening. At a time when egotism and ignorance are closing doors, the FIFF is opening its screens to the human community, the diversity of perspectives and pure beauty, said Mathieu Fleury, President of the festival's supporting association.
This year's Fribourg Film Festival runs from March 21 to 30. During the nine days of the festival, 108 films from 52 countries will be shown, including 17 world premieres and 42 Swiss premieres.
The theme of the festival is the search for freedom. The festival opens and closes with a documentary film about Afghanistan. The festival opens with "Champions of the Golden Valley", a film about the dream of skiers in the mountains of a country on the brink of collapse.
The closing film "Bread & Roses" focuses on female resistance fighters whose rights are trampled underfoot by the Taliban.
Many films at this year's FIFF showed a humanity that turned into brutality, said Thierry Jobin, the festival's artistic director. However, the festival itself remains a platform for encounters that change lives in a positive sense.
