35 institutions and over 60 artists are taking part in the exhibition project "Look how the glacier is disappearing". The nationwide exhibition will be officially opened on the Rhone Glacier in Valais on June 29.

"The Rhone Glacier is the most depicted glacier in Switzerland in art," said curator Bernhard Fibicher in an interview with the Keystone-SDA news agency. The idea for the project was born two and a half years ago, not least because the melting of the glacier is intensifying as a result of climate change. Initially, the idea was to organize a show in a museum.

"But we don't actually need to attract people into the museum, we need to take them outside - to the glaciers," said Fibicher. The project has expanded. Exhibitions that are part of the project have been running since this January. The Aargauer Kunsthaus, for example, is showing works from its collection that have to do with glaciers. The Lucerne Glacier Garden is presenting two art installations. Institutions from Valais to Graubünden are involved.

"We wanted to broaden the discourse on glacier melting - and bring in the voice of culture," said Fibicher. This is why old works, contemporary art, music and literature are all part of the project. Those responsible are also trying to find positive aspects to the topic.

The official opening on the Rhone Glacier will take place at the end of June, as this is when the pass roads are open and visitors can visit this dying glacier. The Geneva artist Carmen Perrin will be showing documents on site to show that the covering of the Rhone Glacier is linked to private commercial purposes; she herself is critical of this. A sound performance is also planned.
