For "Glacier Dreams", Anadol used over 100 million images from archives as well as a specially collected data set of more than 10 million glacier images from Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica, as the Kunsthaus announced on Thursday.
An artificial intelligence programmed by Anadol generates new images from the huge amount of data. The LED screens and mirrors of the cube created especially for the work were staged for the Kunsthaus in such a way that the construction can be viewed both from the outside as a complete sculpture and from the inside.
The immersive installation appeals to all the senses and is intended to encourage reflection on climate change and the melting of the glaciers. "Glacier Dreams" was donated to the Kunsthaus by Bank Julius Baer and can be seen in Zurich for the first time from Saturday. The work was previously shown at Art Basel in 2023.
Born in Istanbul in 1985, Anadol is considered a pioneer of art based on AI technologies. His works have already been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Center Pompidou in Paris, among others.
