No, he didn't put on an Austrian accent and big muscles to imitate Arnold Schwarzenegger, joked the 37-year-old in an interview with dpa. But he had asked the ex-Terminator for permission and his blessing, Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick", "Twisters") said.
After all, Schwarzenegger was his predecessor in the 1987 film adaptation of the dystopian Stephen King classic "The Running Man" - and at the time "one of the biggest stars in the world", said the American actor.
"The most physical role of my entire career"
In the remake (cinema release 13.11.), directed by Edgar Wright, Powell plays Ben Richards, a worker who takes part in a brutal gaming competition in order to take care of his sick daughter with the hoped-for cash prize. In the hit show "The Running Man", participants have to run for their lives for 30 days while professional killers stalk them.
"This is the most physical role I've ever played in my entire career," said Powell, referring to the many stunts. Tom Cruise (63), who is known for his own stunts, gave him important advice, Powell said: "Make your body bulletproof, because you're going to take some hits." Arnold's muscle packages were not his role model, but he trained a lot for tactical fitness, Powell said.
