The magazine asks members of a jury to assess who they consider to be particularly influential in the art world. The list of 100 people and organizations is about who influences which topics are dealt with and whose artworks are shown.
According to the magazine, Mahama is the first person from the African continent to take the top spot. "A position he owes both to his artistic work and his role as a creator of infrastructures that help other artists realize their visions."
Mahama's work deals with themes such as labor, extraction and exploitation. "He uses his position in the global art world to address these issues practically by creating educational and art institutions and building collaborative partnerships," the magazine writes. For years, the artist has invested his profits from sales in a number of institutions in his home town of Tamale.
Presence of the Gulf States
The magazine asked around 30 people from the art world to decide on the list. In second place is Sheikha al-Majasa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairwoman of the Qatari Museums Authority.
The increasing presence of the Gulf states at the top of the list reflects the enormous resources being invested in art and culture there, according to the magazine. The Arab world is increasingly becoming a platform from which artists and curators can expand their work. Last year, Emirati curator Hur Al-Kasimi topped the list, this time she came in third place.
