US actor Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear") believes that many young men are still reluctant to talk about their feelings. In a new film, he plays music legend Bruce Springsteen in a difficult phase of his life. White hopes this will give them courage.
"I think there is still a stigma or a kind of fear among young men to find the right words and learn to communicate their feelings," White told the German news agency DPA in Berlin.
The 34-year-old can be seen from October 23 as music icon Bruce Springsteen in the biopic "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere". The film is about a dark phase in the singer's life ("Born in the U.S.A.") in the early 1980s, full of self-doubt, inner crises and the fight against depression. The album "Nebraska" (1982), one of the most influential records of Springsteen's career, was released during this time.
Film should give hope and courage
Nowadays, many young men are definitely more open in dealing with their feelings and fears compared to New Jersey in 1981, said White. He hopes that people who are in a similar situation to Springsteen back then will feel understood by the film.
At the time, the singer was undergoing therapy to deal with his mental health problems. Not all young people need therapy, said White. But he hopes "they see Bruce's courage in this moment and can then feel courageous themselves".
The film's director, Scott Cooper, expressed similar sentiments. "There's a stigma around men talking about their pain, at least in America. Of course, I can't speak for Germany. Men are lonely, men are isolated, they live lives of quiet desperation, and they do it alone."
Jeremy Allen White had his big breakthrough with "The Bear". Not only did he win several awards for the gastro-drama series, he also became the new darling of the internet world. In "Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere", he plays alongside Jeremy Strong ("Succession"), who plays Springsteen's mentor and manager Jon Landau.
