The Kastelruther Spatzen from South Tyrol are something like the Rolling Stones of folk music. They have been producing a new album every year for decades. They are far from retiring as musicians.

"Of course you ask yourself how much longer this is going to go on. Traveling is also exhausting. But somehow the whole business keeps you fit," said singer Norbert Rier in an interview with the German news agency DPA. Music is definitely an elixir of life.

"Of course, we all realize that we're getting older and certain things don't work the same way as they did when we were younger," emphasized Rier, who turns 65 on 14 April. After longer breaks, it takes a little longer to get back into the rhythm of touring, he reveals. But when you see grandparents, parents and children in the audience enjoying the Spatzen's music at the concerts, it's a great motivation to keep going. "It gives you a lot of strength."

Nature on the farm and on stage

But Rier also has a lot to do in his second profession as a farmer and horse breeder away from the stage - on his farm in Kastelruth in South Tyrol. The music takes up a lot of his time, but the animals need him too.

There's one trick the band doesn't want to pull on their fans: "We won't keep announcing a farewell tour and then carry on after all. If such a tour is on the cards, then it really should be the last tour." Until then, the Kastelruthers want to continue to pay homage to the beauty of nature in their songs. "We sing about the beautiful mountains, our homeland, and show how important intact nature is for us all."
