What has been separated since 1933 is coming together again at the Kunstmuseum Bern: a Kirchner painting is traveling from the German Federal Chancellery to Bern, where it can be seen together with its counterpart in the "Kirchner x Kirchner" exhibition.

The work is called "Sunday of the Mountain Farmers". It is part of a monumental pair of paintings. Its counterpart is "Alpsonntag. Scene at the Fountain", which is part of the Kunstmuseum's collection. The two paintings were last shown together at the Kunsthalle Bern in 1933, in what was the most extensive retrospective of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's (1880-1938) work during his lifetime.
"Sunday of the Mountain Farmers" is known to a wide audience as the background. It hangs in the Cabinet Room of the German Government and is frequently featured in the German news.
The Kunstmuseum Bern has now succeeded in obtaining this painting on loan. It is "a very great honor", according to a press release issued on Wednesday. The exhibition "Kirchner x Kirchner" (12.09.-11.01.2026) shows 65 works by the artist.
