The Lucerne Festival Orchestra is extending the contract with chief conductor Riccardo Chailly by two years until the end of 2028. The 72-year-old Italian has been in office since 2016 and was previously contracted until the end of summer 2026.

In recent years, Chailly has "impressively developed" the orchestra's musical profile, as Artistic Director Sebastian Nordmann was quoted as saying in a Lucerne Festival press release on Monday. The continuation of the collaboration is also in line with the orchestra's wishes.

In addition to the concerts in Lucerne, tours abroad and projects with the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) are planned for the coming years. Chailly will continue to conduct Lucerne Festival concerts in spring and summer, including the official opening.

Chailly is currently also Music Director of La Scala Opera House in Milan. He will begin his last season in this role on December 7.

The Lucerne Festival Orchestra first appeared in 2003. Since 2022, it can also be heard at the festival's spring events, which take place at the end of March.
