A golden toilet by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan is to be auctioned in New York in November. The starting bid for the fully functional toilet made of 18-carat gold will be based on the current gold price on the day of the auction, according to auction house Sotheby's.

Cattelan made two versions of the golden toilet called "America" in 2016. One of them was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. It was then loaned to the birthplace of Winston Churchill in the UK, from where it was stolen in 2019. The second version was sold to a private collector in 2017 - and is now being auctioned.

Cattelan is known for his witty and quirky sculptures. Last year, one of his bananas attached to the wall with adhesive tape was auctioned in New York for 6.2 million dollars.
