Marlene Lufen (53) shared on Instagram on Monday, November 18, that her mother has dementia. She began by saying: "The first signs were there 10 years ago, we just didn't recognize them."

"A far cry from Hollywood romance"

The presenter went on to explain that she and her family did not want to admit that her intelligent and loving mother could develop Alzheimer's. One phrase her mother often uses to make a point is, "I don't have dementia!" Although she still recognizes everyone, she often no longer understands the world around her. Marlene Lufen emphasizes that this disease not only affects those affected themselves, but also everyone close to them. "The reality for family members is a far cry from Hollywood romance," she says. It is a huge challenge to take care of everything, but she is not alone.

Marlene finds her balance

In her podcast M for Marlene, she talks to her sister Nadja about how they find a balance in order to stay healthy themselves. The search for a suitable home was difficult, and the thought of her 83-year-old mother sitting alone in a room there overwhelms the Sat.1 breakfast TV presenter emotionally. She wants to spend a lot of time with her mother, but also wants to accommodate her professional commitments. The family has now found a way to come to terms, but it has been a "difficult few years", as Marlene Lufen says. She received a lot of encouragement from her fans on Instagram.
