The National Council is debating a ban on firecrackers. The draft bill being prepared provides for a ban on fireworks that only make popping noises. The SVP and FDP oppose the law.

"It's not just about fireworks, it's about our freedom and our traditions," said Roman Hug (SVP/GR) on Thursday. The ban would turn into a bureaucratic nightmare and create problems that are not yet known.

The noise and air pollution caused by fireworks are harmful to groundwater, agriculture and vulnerable people, such as people with post-traumatic stress disorder, said Anna Rosenwasser (SP/ZH). Domestic, farm and wild animals also suffer. "Panicked flight reactions lead to injuries and deaths," said Kilian Baumann (Greens/BE).

The proposed changes to the law are an indirect counter-proposal to the fireworks initiative, which aims to enshrine a ban on loud fireworks in the constitution.
