Netflix pulled Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of the film "Emilia Pérez", from its big Oscar campaign. In doing so, the streaming service distanced itself from the transgender actress. This was due to old posts by the Spanish actress on social media.

The streaming giant had actually advertised as part of a campaign for Jacques Audiard's film, which is in the running for the most nominations with 13 Oscar trophies. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Netflix has now removed Karla Sofía Gascón from all of its campaigns.

A page on the Netflix website promoting the film now shows a picture of Zoë Saldaña instead of Karla Sofia Gascón. She is nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.

Last week, old posts by Karla Sofía Gascón appeared on social networks in which she described Islam as "disgusting for humanity". In other posts, she made fun of diversity in the entertainment industry. Some comments criticized the anti-racist movement following the death of George Floyd.

The actress subsequently apologized in a statement sent by Netflix. In an interview with the Spanish-language version of US broadcaster CNN, she then defended herself against the accusation of being "racist". She would not withdraw from the Oscar race, she also said.

"Emilia Pérez" dominated the Golden Globes at the beginning of January, winning four trophies. The film won one of them for best comedy and best non-English language film. In December, the film won the European Film Award in Lucerne, where Karla Sofía Gascón was also awarded Best Actress.

The 13 Oscar nominations - a record for a non-English-language production - include those for best director and best picture. The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2 in Los Angeles.
