The Christmas season also shows how important it is to treat each other with generosity and hope, writes Princess Kate in a message of greeting to the participants of her traditional Christmas mass on Friday.
Kate is hosting the "Together at Christmas" service in the world-famous Westminster Abbey for the fifth time. Around 1600 people are expected to attend, including celebrities such as Hollywood star Kate Winslet. The service offers a "moment of shared connection", writes the wife of heir to the throne Prince William (43). Christmas is a reminder of how "our lives are interwoven".
Despite all the hustle and bustle and family traditions, there is a quieter sense of what this time evokes. There is a gentleness to the Christmas season "that reminds us of something that is easy to forget: that what we do matters," writes Kate.
Difficult months for the royals
The princess made her cancer public last year and announced in January that she was relieved to be on the road to recovery. Her father-in-law, King Charles III (77), is still being treated for an undisclosed cancer.
In recent weeks, the royal family has had to deal with the scandal surrounding Charles' brother, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor (65), who has since been demoted to commoner. The 65-year-old was stripped of all titles and honors and will not celebrate Christmas with the royal family. The reason for this was his association with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
