Olten composer Thomas Trachsel has been awarded this year's Art Prize of the Canton of Solothurn. The 52-year-old is one of the most internationally renowned composers of wind music, the Solothurn cantonal government announced on Wednesday.

He was awarded the art prize, worth 20,000 Swiss francs, for his diverse and outstanding achievements as a composer, it added.

Trachsel has also led various wind orchestras for 20 years, taught music at the Progymnasium and runs his own music publishing company. As President of the Music Commission of the Swiss Wind Music Association, he is committed to promoting young people.

The Canton of Solothurn will also be awarding eight specialist prizes and two recognition prizes of CHF 10,000 each on November 11 at the Stadttheater Olten. In addition to individuals, the prize winners also include an association. The prize for cultural preservation goes to the Friends of Matzendorf Ceramics Association.
