On Tuesday, Art Basel opens its doors to an illustrious circle of VIP guests. The world's leading art fair is confident that it will be able to defy the difficult art market environment.

With 289 galleries from 42 countries, Art Basel 2025 remains the flagship of the global art fair circuit under the "Art Basel" label at its place of origin. It has to hold its own in a weakened art market. According to the Art Market Report published by Art Basel and UBS, the market slumped by 12 percent last year. The high-price sector was particularly affected.

However, Art Basel Director Maike Cruse, who is running the art fair for the second time this year, is not very worried. "Although the market is becoming more selective, high-quality works at the right price are still attracting a great deal of interest," Cruse told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Art Basel will be open to the general public from Thursday.
