The 75th edition of the Berlinale, one of the most important film festivals, begins on Thursday. The film "La Cache" by Lionel Baier and the Swiss co-production "Mother's Baby" will be screened in competition.

"La Cache" by Lionel Baier is based on the novel of the same name by Christophe Boltanski. It follows a Jewish family in Paris from the Nazi-German occupation until May 1968. While the parents take part in demonstrations on the street, the nine-year-old protagonist lives with his grandparents and his eccentric uncles. When an illustrious guest seeks refuge with them, the family dynamic begins to change.

With this plot, Lausanne screenwriter and director Lionel Baier is entering the competition of the 75th Berlinale, which begins on Thursday. The film, for which the Zurich trio Lionel, Nora and Diego Baldenweg composed the soundtrack, therefore has a chance of winning the Silver or Golden Bear.

Also in competition at the Berlinale is the psychological thriller "Mother's Baby" by Austrian director Johanna Moder. The screenwriter Arne Kohlweyer, who works in Switzerland, co-wrote the book for the film.

Swiss-German actress Marie Leuenberger plays Julia, a talented conductor who has long wanted to have a child. Leuenberger is known for her role as Nora in "The Divine Order" by director Petra Volpe.

Volpe, in turn, will celebrate the world premiere of her new film "Heldin" in the Berlinale Special section. German actress Leonie Benesch ("September 5") plays the leading role of Floria - a dedicated nurse who is passionately devoted to her patients in an understaffed surgical department. When Floria makes a fatal mistake, the entire night shift threatens to get out of hand.

The 75th Berlinale, which opens this Thursday, runs until February 23
