Will Veronica Fusaro manage a smooth performance and make it to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC)? The second semi-final starts on Thursday at 9 pm in the Wiener Stadthalle.

Switzerland will have to step on the gas to make it to the final on Saturday. Betting agencies predict that Switzerland has a 43 percent chance of reaching the final.

Before the Thun musician Veronica Fusaro traveled to the Wiener Stadthalle on Thursday, she was feeling good, as she said in an interview made available to the media by her team: "I feel very calm, very at peace with myself, and I hope I can keep this calm."

She is now focusing very strongly on the song, "on the story I get to tell". Her contribution, the rock ballad "Alice", is about a woman who tries to set boundaries. But these are not respected. These boundaries are symbolized in the staging on the ESC stage using red ropes.

Competition with a high vocal range

Five countries are eliminated on Friday night. Fusaro will perform with starting number seven. What is striking about the competition on Thursday evening is that they like to sing high, accompanied by classical instruments and with a lot of epicness.

These include Danish participant Søren Torpegaard Lund, who switches to a head voice in his club-ready song, Ukrainian Leléka, who also soars to the highest notes, Romanian Alexandra Căpitănescu, who provides a Nina Hagen moment in her rock song, and singer Atvara, who sings like a siren towards the end in her cinematic entry for Latvia.

Speaking of high vocal ranges: the second semi-final will see a reunion with countertenor JJ, who won last year's ESC for Austria with "Wasted Love". However, he will be performing a new song.

The second semi-final will be broadcast live on Swiss television, on SRF 2, from 9 pm.
