Thomas Gottschalk caused a stir at the Bambi awards ceremony with a confused speech. Now the entertainer explains why he himself lost the plot - and how the controversial Cher sentence came about.

  • Thomas Gottschalk seemed unusually agitated and disoriented during his Bambi speech.
  • The presenter explained that he had a "blackout" and did not recognize himself.
  • An encounter with Cher and a mix-up backstage had completely thrown him off his stride.

Thomas Gottschalk has spoken out after his much-discussed appearance at the Bambi Gala. The 75-year-old presenter had clearly lost his train of thought on stage on Thursday evening, floundered several times and delivered anecdotes that caused irritation among the audience. One sentence in particular caused boos: Cher was "the only woman I have taken seriously all my life".

Gottschalk is now self-critical in an interview with "Bild". He "didn't know himself like that" and was downright shocked by his own behavior. He attributes the slip-up to a confusion backstage.

There he first met the real Cher - only to see an artificial Cher performance on stage shortly afterwards. "I thought, huh, are you kidding me?" says Gottschalk. This moment completely confused him.

No worries about his health

The presenter was even briefly convinced that he had fallen into a trap on the show "Verstehen Sie Spass?". "I no longer knew where I was and what I was supposed to be doing here," he explains openly.

Gottschalk dismisses concerns about his health. He is "hale and hearty", but emphasizes that the appearance was unpleasant for him. He has known Cher for years from their time together as neighbors in Malibu - all the more reason for him to regret that his remarks on stage seemed misleading.
