Hediger's appointment was made by the Board of Trustees, as the institution for the preservation of film heritage announced on Tuesday. The 56-year-old Hediger was already the designated director of the Cinémathèque in January 2008, turned it down and accepted the appointment after a few hours.
In June 2008, the Cinémathèque then announced the appointment of Frédéric Maire to replace Hediger. Maire became director on November 1, 2009 and retired in September. As a professor at the University of Bochum at the time, Hediger preferred to pursue his academic career in Germany.
Hediger is now the successor to his own successor, so to speak. According to the Cinémathèque, his professional credentials were the deciding factor. He currently teaches at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
