Got himself into trouble: Patrick Fischer, coach of the Swiss national ice hockey team until Wednesday
Keystone
A forged Covid certificate proved fatal for national team coach Patrick Fischer, who was sacked on Wednesday. Now the man who set the ball rolling is speaking out.
SRF editor Pascal Schmitz is at the origin of Fischer's dismissal as national team coach. In Wednesday's edition of "10vor10", the producer and presenter, who has worked for SRF since 2013, explained what happened.
According to him, a meeting took place around a month ago while researching a portrait of the national team coach. In the presence of Schmitz, another SRF colleague and the head of media of the Swiss Hockey Association, Fischer spoke without being asked about the forged Covid certificate. "As a journalist, you have to ask yourself: What do you do with this information now? Just forget about it or not do your job? We opted for the latter," says Schmitz.
This was followed by classic journalistic research. SRF requested the penalty order from the public prosecutor's office in Lucerne and claimed an overriding public interest. The penalty order was received around ten days ago, according to Schmitz. "On this basis, we then confronted Fischer with the facts." This was followed by the video with Fischer's statement, which sparked a public debate, as a result of which the association pulled the ripcord on Wednesday.
