Germany on course after initial difficulties

As in the 2:0 win against Poland, the Germans had some initial problems in attack and were even trailing 1:0 until the 56th minute. Then Sjoeke Nüsken turned the tide with a foul penalty and top scorer Lea Schüller scored two goals in ten minutes from completely free positions. In the 25th minute, Denmark's Amalie Vangsgaard caught the German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger with one of the few shots in the near corner of the goal.

The Germans had a home game in front of 34,165 spectators in the sold-out St. Jakob-Park and deserved their success thanks to their superiority on the field. However, the Danes also suffered some bad luck in the decisive 1-2. Emma Snerle was hit full in the face by a ball from a team-mate at close range and was left dazed. The VAR also played a major role. In the first half, it disallowed a German goal due to offsides and revoked a hand penalty awarded by Portuguese referee Catarina Campos. Before the 1:1, on the other hand, he intervened in favor of the Germans after a rather innocuous challenge in the penalty area.

Their European Championship record remains impressive: they have only lost once in 23 group matches, in 2013 against Norway.
