Germany wins for the first time - Switzerland in the quarter-finals

Germany has won its first game at the Ice Hockey World Championship. Harold Kreis' team had no trouble in their 6-2 win against Hungary. Switzerland is already guaranteed a place in the last eight.

A double strike in the final minute of the second period to make it 4:0 decided the unequal duel in Zurich. It was only after the fifth goal at the start of the final period that the Germans allowed the Hungarians to get into the game, who were still able to make up some ground. Mannheim's Leon Gawanke shone for the winners with three goals.

The defeat of Hungary made Switzerland the first team to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Jan Cadieux's team will play Hungary on Saturday.

In the other group, Canada leads the table. With a 3:1 win against Slovenia, the record World Cup winners secured their fifth win in five games. The North Americans spread the goals over all thirds, Slovenia shortened the score 65 seconds before the end.
