FC Basel confirmed its good form. Fabio Celestini's team showed no weakness in their 4:1 win in Yverdon.
Things went well for FCB and their numerous fans in the almost sold-out Stade Municipal. The favorites struggled unsuccessfully against the Vaudois side's tight defense for just half an hour. Then captain Dominik Schmid scored with a deflected long-range shot to make it 1:0. As Yverdon were down to ten men after Anthony Sauthier was shown a red card for a serious foul (19'), the opening goal was almost a foregone conclusion.
While Sauthier's 100th appearance for Yverdon came to an early end, Basel were able to get off to a flying start. Bénie Traoré made it 2-0 before the break after a wonderful combination with an assist from Xherdan Shaqiri. Leon Avdullahu and Kevin Carlos were successful in the second half. Like Traoré, it was the sixth goal of the season for Kevin Carlos, who joined from Yverdon.
Basel are generally brilliant up front. With 35 goals in 14 games, FCB have by far the most successful attack in the league. Yverdon, on the other hand, have scored just one goal in their last three games: Mauro Rodrigues' 1:4 at a time when there was nothing left for the Vaud side to win against Basel.
