Norway secure their second win in their second European Championship preliminary round match. As against Switzerland, the Norwegians also won 2:1 against Finland after a mixed performance.
The Norwegians took a big step towards the quarter-finals in front of 7,376 spectators in Sion thanks to a late goal from Caroline Graham Hansen, whose solo effort in the 84th minute robbed the Finns of what should have been a deserved point. After the early 0:1 through an own goal by Eva Nyström, Finland were the better team, equalized through Oona Sevenius before the break and were more dangerous for a long time in the second half. Among others, Evelina Summanen, teammate of Luana Bühler at Tottenham, hit the post.
Norway also largely lacked the creative and surprising element in their second European Championship appearance. Ada Hegerberg and Co. produced surprisingly little in terms of play. For a long time, the two most dangerous actions after the own goal originated from a corner kick: Norway hit the edge of the goal twice within a few seconds (24th and 25th).
There was hardly any sign of the highly-rated attacking players from Norway until the final quarter of an hour. They then steadily increased the tempo, probably benefiting somewhat from the Finns' dwindling strength, and even had the luck of the post on their side. In the 84th minute, Barcelona attacker Graham Hansen hit the inside of the post to secure a fortunate victory.
At the end of the preliminary round, the Norwegians face Iceland in Thun, while Finland take on Switzerland in Geneva. Both matches will kick off at 21:00 on Thursday.
