The épée fencer Ian Hauri wins a bronze medal at the European Championships in Basel. The 22-year-old from Geneva loses in the semi-finals against the Frenchman Luidgi Midelton, the eventual winner, 7:15.
In contrast to the Olympic Games, the losers of the semi-finals no longer fight for bronze at the European Championships.
Hauri beat the Olympic champion Romain Cannone from France 15:9 in the 1/16 final and since this coup, the Frenchman has been virtually unstoppable. He won the battles in the round of 16 and quarter-finals with 15:5 and 15:9. Hauri, currently number 71 in the world rankings, was part of the U20 team that won gold at the European Championships two years ago.
Alexis Bayard from Valais, who has been selected for the Olympic Games in Paris, lost in the quarter-finals to Gergely Siklosi from Hungary, who is ranked second in the world.
Max Heinzer, who is ending his career in Basel, was eliminated in the 1/16 finals.
