Zurich strengthens its squad with a world champion. Benjamin Mendy, who won the 2018 World Cup with France, has signed a contract with FCZ until 2026, the Super League club has announced.
Mendy was most recently under contract as a team-mate of Yvon Mvogo at French second division club Lorient. However, the 30-year-old full-back did not make any appearances for the Bretons this season. He played his last competitive match in May of last year.
On Tuesday, Mendy terminated his contract with Lorient before signing for FC Zurich. "We are naturally very pleased and also a little proud that we were able to sign such a top-class player. He will be an important support for our young players in particular," explained FCZ President Ancillo Canepa in the press release.
Mendy, who trained in Le Havre, has already played for Marseille, Monaco and Manchester City. In England, he was at coach Pep Guardiola's disposal for four years until he was suspended in the summer of 2021. At this point, he was arrested for alleged sexual offenses and spent several months in custody. Two years later and after two court cases, he was acquitted. The wages withheld by Manchester City had to be paid to him retrospectively.
Since Mendy has been able to concentrate fully on football again, he has played 15 games for Lorient in Ligue 1, scoring two goals. He was unable to prevent relegation at the end of last season. He made his last appearance for the French national team in November 2019. At the 2018 World Cup, he only played 40 minutes in the final group match against Denmark (0-0).
