Arminia Bielefeld have sensationally reached the German Cup final. The third-division club's high-flying run towards Berlin was not thwarted by double winners Bayer Leverkusen.
For the first time in the club's history, Bielefeld have reached the cup final after beating Leverkusen 2:1 at home on May 24. Their opponents will then be Stuttgart or Leipzig, who face each other in the second semi-final on Wednesday. Arminia's progress to the final is as surprising as it is deserved. The team beat four Bundesliga teams - Union Berlin, Freiburg, Bremen and now Leverkusen - in the Cup in recent weeks.
Everything started well for Leverkusen in Bielefeld. After 17 minutes, Jonathan Tah gave the favorites led by Swiss national team captain Granit Xhaka. However, the underdogs responded immediately: Marius Wörl equalized three minutes later and Maximilian Grosser scored shortly before the break to make it 2:1. Bielefeld successfully defended this lead. They survived the trickiest moment in the 81st minute when Jeremie Frimpong hit the post.
Arminia Bielefeld are the first third division side to reach the German Cup final since Union Berlin in 2001.
