Arsenal and Inter Milan go into the Champions League quarter-final second legs with a cushion. The Londoners outclassed Real Madrid 3:0, while Inter shocked Bayern 2:1 in Munich.

Bayern gritted their teeth for a long time against Inter Milan's compact defense. And then it was Thomas Müller, of all people, who redeemed the home team eleven minutes after coming on as a substitute. The original Bayern player, whose contract expires at the end of the season and will not be renewed, was in the right place five minutes before the end, as he so often is. After a feed from Konrad Laimer, Müller stole free at the second post and beat Yann Sommer from close range.

Bayern pressed for the winning goal after the equalizer - and allowed themselves to be bungled. Davide Frattesi successfully completed the quick counter-attack just three minutes after the 1:1.

The Italians showed their usual cool in the game, which was refereed by Swiss referee Sandro Schärer, did not allow much in defense and took advantage of the few opportunities they had. Captain Lautaro Martinez scored in the 38th minute after a perfect pass from Marcus Thuram. Shortly before that, Harry Kane hit the post from close range after equally fine work from Michael Olise.

Bayern's first home defeat in the Champions League for 22 games could cost them dear. They will have to win in Milan if they are to continue dreaming of reaching the final on May 31.

Rice scores twice from a free kick

Arsenal celebrated a deserved 3-0 win at home against Real Madrid. In the first half, the Gunners were on level terms, but turned up the heat in the second half. Man of the match was Declan Rice with two direct free-kicks from around 25 meters. First, the Englishman scored from a half-right position on 58 minutes, flicking the ball around the wall with great panache. Twelve minutes later, he curled the ball into the top right-hand corner of the goal from a half-left position. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had no chance of stopping both the first two goals and Mikel Merino's 3-0 with a quarter of an hour to go.

The Belgian, together with the players in front of him, prevented an even greater defeat for the defending champions on several occasions. The Madrilenians will return home with a heavy burden and are in danger of missing out on the semi-finals of the top flight for the first time in five years. Arsenal, on the other hand, are on course to reach the semi-finals for the first time in 16 years.
