FC Basel clearly missed out on a much-needed win in the Europa League. The Swiss champions lost 3-1 in Salzburg, not least due to a weak first half.
Basel's chances of advancing to the round of 16 are no longer very good. A lot would have to go right for FCB in the final round next Thursday for them to make it into the top 24. However, a win at home against the Czechs from Viktoria Pilsen and a dramatic improvement in performance compared to the game against Salzburg are essential.
FC Basel were a sorry sight for a long time against the leaders of the Austrian championship. In the first half, they were literally paraded around. The 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic scored twice to give them a 2:0 lead after a quarter of an hour, and Frans Krätzig increased the lead to 3:0 in the 35th minute. The lead of the strong Salzburg team was highly deserved, even at this level.
Basel made far too many misplaced passes, before the 0:1 through Flavius Daniliuc, the Austrian in the Basel ranks, and before the 0:3 through Dominik Schmid. Coach Ludovic Magnin made three changes at the break, including Xherdan Shaqiri leaving the game early. Basel then got to grips with the game better and managed to score a flattering and fortunate equalizer through Jeremy Agbonifo. However, FCB never came close to scoring again.
