The fact that the team celebrated a spectacular 4:3 away win against Zurich on Sunday did not help Magnin: the following day, the club announced the Vaud native's dismissal "due to a lack of sporting development". After mixed performances towards the end of last year, the hoped-for turnaround had failed to materialize.
The 46-year-old joined the double winners this season from Lausanne-Sport. He had to cope with his first disappointment right at the start when his team failed to qualify for the Champions League. Things did not go according to plan in the second-tier Europa League either: with just two wins from seven games, the team is facing an early exit from the European Cup.
In particular, the poor performance in the recent 3-1 defeat in Salzburg is likely to have led to the club's decision to start the second half of the season with a new coach. The poor results in the last few home games in the championship were also a talking point: four draws and one defeat in the last five games at St. Jakob-Park. FCB are currently in 4th place in the league, ten points behind leaders Thun.
The club intends to announce a successor "as soon as possible".
