Camille Rast's first slalom after winning gold at the World Championships brought her no luck. After a strong run, the skier from Valais was painfully eliminated shortly before the finish in Sestriere.

Camille Rast got off to a furious start in Piedmont with bib number 1 and was on course for a top position after the first run. However, the discipline leader, who had won twice in the previous seven World Cup slaloms this winter and had never finished lower than 5th, came under pressure five poles before the finish. She fell heavily on her left hip and slid across the finish line lying down.

According to a Swiss Ski representative, Rast, who did not give any interviews after her first retirement of the season, did not suffer any major injuries, but probably just a bruised thigh. Up until her retirement, the 25-year-old was skiing very fast. At the last intermediate time measurement before the finish, she was still just under two tenths ahead of half-time leader Mikaela Shiffrin.

The 99-time World Cup winner from the USA, who had missed out on qualifying for the second run in the giant slalom the day before, leads by nine hundredths ahead of Croatia's Zrinka Ljutic. Katharina Liensberger from Austria (0.34 seconds behind) follows in third place.

The best Swiss racer ahead of the second run (start 12.30 pm) is Wendy Holdener in sixth place. The runner-up in the World Championships from Schwyz lost 0.52 seconds to Shiffrin.

Mélanie Meillard is in 20th position after 50 racers have started, but is already almost two seconds behind. Aline Danioth (2.46 back) is in 30th place and has to fear for a place in the final.
