Beach volleyball player Esmée Böbner reads a book about Japanese wisdom in preparation for a match. These are the Olympic splinters from Sunday.
Toilet emergency in the middle of the race
Suddenly Nils Politt was in a hurry. The professional cyclist developed stomach problems in the road race on Sunday and urgently needed a toilet. As his race was over, the German simply stopped on the final lap in Paris, parked his bike and sought an emergency toilet in a restaurant. Various videos are circulating on the X platform showing Politt in the "Café des Deux Moulins", known from the movie "The Fabulous World of Amélie", which is packed with fans. Obviously smiling with relief, the classics specialist makes his way through the crowd, climbs over the barrier and gets back on his bike. Politt crossed the finish line in 70th place, almost 20 minutes behind.
Japanese book in the sand
A video on Instagram shows Swiss beach volleyball player Esmée Böbner sitting in the sand shortly before her final group match on Saturday. She is eating a banana and reading a book. In preparation for the match, she reads a few pages of the book "Ikigai", which describes the Japanese way of life. "It helped me mentally to be in the moment," the 24-year-old tells the Keystone-SDA news agency. Together with Zoé Vergé-Dépré, she won the round of 16 against China's Xue Chen and Xia Xinyi on Sunday and is now through to the quarter-finals.
Air pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec becomes an internet hit
Turkish air pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec, at 51 the oldest medal winner at the Games so far, became an internet hit with his performances in Paris. While many of his opponents shot with all sorts of frills such as eye patches and hearing protection and sometimes looked like actors in a science fiction movie, Dikec won his silver medal in the team competition looking completely relaxed and - apart from his corrective glasses - without any technical assistance.
Dennis Rodman's daughter heroic
Thanks to Trinity Rodman, the US women have reached the semi-finals of the Olympic soccer tournament. Rodman? Yes, it really is the daughter of the eccentric former basketball star Dennis Rodman. The 22-year-old scored the decisive goal from an acute angle in the 105th minute of the 1:0 win over Japan after extra time in Paris. England coach Emma Hayes' team is thus still on course for gold. With four triumphs, the Americans are the record Olympic champions in women's football.
