The leg injuries sustained by overall World Cup winner Federica Brignone in her serious fall on Thursday are even worse than first diagnosed.

According to the Italian Winter Sports Federation (Fisi), an initial diagnosis in hospital following her fall in the giant slalom at the Italian Championships in Val di Fassa revealed a double fracture with displacement of the tibial plateau and the fibular head in her left leg.

As a result, Brignone underwent surgery on Thursday. During the operation, the doctors also discovered a torn cruciate ligament. This will be examined more closely over the next few weeks, the Fisi announced. The giant slalom world champion will begin her rehabilitation in the next few days.

"I will have to face a new challenge, which I will face as always," Brignone said in a statement to the Ansa news agency eleven months before the Olympic Games in her home country. In her opinion, "the conditions on the course were perfect".

"I felt good and if I could turn back the clock, I would do the same again, but with the aim of not crashing," said the 34-year-old Italian. Last season, Brignone not only won the overall World Cup thanks to ten victories, but also the small globe in the downhill and giant slalom.
