The exceptional Czech player Roman Cervenka is leaving the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers one year before the end of his contract and returning to his home country. Pontus Aberg has returned to the Obersee in his place.
The move had become apparent in the last few days. Roman Cervenka is returning to the Czech Republic for "personal reasons", as the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers write on their website. He signed a two-year contract with Dynamo Pardubice.
Cervenka will be replaced by the Swede Pontus Aberg. The 30-year-old already played in the second part of the 2022-23 season at Obersee and scored 22 points (10 goals) in 22 games. Most recently, he was the top scorer in the KHL with the Kazakh club Barys Astana.
Cervenka played five seasons with the Lakers and was instrumental in the team's upswing. The 38-year-old Czech scored an average of 1.1 points per game. Last season, on the other hand, proved to be difficult, but ended brilliantly with the World Championship title at the home tournament in Prague. Cervenka would have had one more year under contract in Rapperswil-Jona.
