Chelsea win the Conference League final. In Wroclaw, Poland, the English side turned the game around against Betis Sevilla with Ricardo Rodriguez and won 4:1.
He became world champion with the U17s in 2009 and won the German Cup with Wolfsburg in 2015. And now, ten years after his last title win, it looked as if Ricardo Rodriguez could also call himself a European Cup winner at the age of 32 until he was substituted at the break.
In the final of the Conference League, the third-highest European club competition, the experienced Andalusians, coached by 71-year-old Chilean Manuel Pellegrini, made the young Londoners look old in the first half. They repeatedly profited from mistakes in England's build-up play. One such mistake led to the deserved opening goal for the underdogs in the 9th minute.
Veteran Isco fed winger Abde Ezzalzouli, who gave Filip Jörgensen in the Chelsea goal no chance to defend. With two goals in the semi-final against Fiorentina, the 23-year-old Moroccan had already played a key role in qualifying for the final.
The fact that Betis failed to win the title in the first European Cup final in the club's history was partly due to a lack of chances in the first half, but also to Chelsea's improved performance in the second half.
The favorites turned the game around with a double strike (65th/70th). Cole Palmer was at the origin of both goals. First the England international set up Argentinian world champion Enzo Fernandez, then forward Nicolas Jackson. Substitutes Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo made it clear in the closing stages.
Chelsea are the fourth title winners in the Conference League, which was introduced for the 2021/22 season, and the second from England after West Ham (2023). The Londoners, coached by Enzo Maresca, follow Olympiakos Piraeus, who won the title last year.
By winning the Conference League, Chelsea have become the first club to lift all four major trophies in European club football. The Blues have won the Champions League, the Europa League and the Cup Winners' Cup twice each.
