Albane Valenzuela has been the top-ranked Swiss player in the world rankings for five years. Thanks to her recent successes, Chiara Tamburlini has now taken over the top spot as world number 63 by a wafer-thin margin.
At the five-million-dollar tournament in Saudi Arabia, the player from eastern Switzerland finished eighth with just under 100,000 dollars, her second-highest prize money as a professional to date. This also helps Tamburlini in the world rankings. A year ago, she was still ranked 355th.
Thanks in part to her three victories on the Ladies European Tour, she has quickly climbed into the top 70 in the world and is now practically on a par with Albane Valenzuela from Geneva, who plays on the much more lucrative LPGA Tour. Valenzuela had to settle for 33rd place at the highly lucrative event in Saudi Arabia and therefore dropped one position behind Tamburlini in the world rankings.
However, that could change quickly. Valenzuela will be competing at the LPGA Thailand from Thursday, while Tamburlini will not be back on the Ladies European Tour until the beginning of March in Australia.
